Marcellus Shale

Gas Industry Topics

The House Democratic Policy Committee will hold a public hearing to consider Marcellus Shale drilling issues 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Mary Welch Honors Hall, Lycoming College.

“There are so many underlying concerns about Marcellus Shale drilling,” said state Rep. Rick Mirabito, D-Williamsport, who is hosting the hearing. “I want people to understand we are paying attention.”

The gas drilling issue is about more than charging fees to support environmental conservation and infrastructure, Mirabito noted.

It also is about people who lease their land for drilling and other property owners. Those testifying before the committee will include:

  • Sonya Barclay, a Cogan Station landowner.
  • Emily Krafjack, community outreach coordinator, Wyoming County.
  • Ted Stroter, retired chemist and environmental safety engineer.
  • William desRosiers, field director, Energy in Depth.
  • Dr. Jonathan Williamson, director, Center for the Study of Community and the Economy, Lycoming College.

The hearing is one of a series of those being held by the committee on issues facing the state.
